Detailed Summer Camp Description

Every class begins with stretching the body and breathing exercises to get the body prepared for singing. Then Speech Level Singing® (SLS) vocalises are applied to the voice as warm-ups for proper vocal functioning in the SLS methodology. Each student receives a pre-recorded compact disc of SLS vocalises for daily practice during the weeks. (However, students who are studying privately should use their private lesson CDs, as the vocal exercises given there are a more appropriate “prescription” to cure any bad habits and advance the student. Private lessons are encouraged to achieve the fastest vocal development.)

In Week 1 – After stretching and SLS vocalizes, a 30 minute lecture and class discussion is engaged regarding the voice’s functionality and why the Speech Level Singing Technique® is very successful. The topic is entitled “Getting To Know Your Vocal Instrument.” Utilization of certain SLS tools is covered to explain how the technique enhances vocal tone, strength, ease, range, agility, vibrato, confidence, and achieves vocal balance, making it easier to sing. Afterwards, Solo Performances & Critique: Each student sings solos of their & instructor’s choice and receives constructive and supportive feedback from classmates and the instructor to improve technique, style and overall performance, which serves as preparation for the Week 7 Showcase Performance.(Come to the first class with a song prepared to sing!) The class is always very supportive and the instructor makes sure all are sharing constructive and honest feedback towards the goal of improvement.

In Week 2 – After stretching and SLS vocalizes, a 30 minute lecture and class discussion is engaged regarding Microphone Technique and Stage Presence. The discussion teaches the do’s and don’ts of working with a microphone and discusses what stage presence is and how to command and keep the attention of the audience. Afterwards, Solo Performances & Critique: Each student sings solos of their & instructor’s choice and receives constructive and supportive feedback from classmates and the instructor to improve technique, style and overall performance towards preparing for the Week 7 Showcase Performance.

In Week 3 – After stretching and SLS vocalizes, a 30 minute learning of one to two group songs to be performed at the week 7 showcase performance. Afterwards, Solo Performances & Critique: Each student sings solos of their & instructor’s choice and receives constructive and supportive feedback from classmates and the instructor to improve technique, style and overall performance towards preparing for the Week 7 Showcase Performance.

In Week 4 – After stretching, SLS vocalizes and practicing the group song(s), a 30 minute lecture and class discussion on the intricacies on preparing and executing a performance in an audition for pop performances and musical theatre. The discussion teaches what to do and how to prepare for an audition. Afterwards, Solo Performances & Critique: Each student sings solos of their & instructor’s choice and receives constructive and supportive feedback from classmates and the instructor to improve technique, style and overall performance towards preparing for the Week 7 Showcase Performance.

It is often times amazing to see and hear the improvement at the end of the series. A performance showcase is the final class, held in a public location. Each student invites friends and loved ones to witness and hear their progress. The classes are good to start and advance one’s singing and learning about one’s voice and what’s required for personal improvement.
