Vocal Technique & Performance Class Description
Detailed Class Description
Every class begins with stretching the body and breathing exercises to get the body prepared for singing. Then Speech Level Singing® (SLS) vocalises are applied to the voice as warm-ups for proper vocal functioning in the SLS methodology. Each student receives a pre-recorded compact disc of SLS vocalises for daily practice during the weeks. (However, students who are studying privately should use their private lesson CDs, as the vocal exercises given there are a more appropriate “prescription” to cure any bad habits and advance the student. Private lessons from any Certified SLS Instructor are encouraged to achieve the fastest vocal development.) After group warm-ups, each student sings solos of their choice and receives constructive and supportive feedback from classmates and the instructor to improve technique, style and overall performance. The class is always very supportive and the instructor monitors to ensure all are sharing constructive and honest feedback towards the goal of improvement.
The second class of the series is very important. A one-and-a-half hour lecture and class discussion is engaged regarding the voice’s functionality and why the Speech Level Singing Technique® is extremely successful. The topic is entitled “Getting To Know Your Vocal Instrument.” Utilization of certain SLS tools is covered to explain how the technique enhances vocal tone, strength, ease, range, agility, vibrato, confidence, and achieves vocal balance, making it easier to sing.
The primary focus of the Level One class is vocal technique to strengthen and improve the individual’s voice. The Level One class is a beginner’s class, but you must be able to sing any easy song in tune. (If you are unsure you meet this requirement, schedule a one-hour private lesson with the instructor to make sure you qualify.)
Level Two class focuses more on performance. The Level Two class is a slightly beginner to immediate class and requires completion of the Level One Class or completion of 4 hours private study with a Certified SLS Instructor and one recital or public performance. (Please contact the instructor with any questions.)
Each class the students are given suggestions and “homework” to practice during the week, with the goal towards improvement. It is often times amazing to see and hear the improvement at the end of the series. A performance showcase is the final class, held in a public location. Each student invites friends and loved ones to witness and hear their progress. Its another very supportive and fun environment.
